Last Z: Survival Shooter Formation Guide: Heroes, Factions, and Troops
Updated October 12, 2026
A strong formation in Last Z: Survival Shooter starts with the heroes you have already upgraded—not a fixed lineup template. Your best results depend on unlocked talents, compatible troops, equipment, and the opponents you encounter.
A full-faction squad and a 3+2 split are both worth considering. Neither approach is universally superior, so check what each arrangement actually activates before spending resources on a replacement.
How Faction Counters Work
The three factions follow a circular advantage system:
| Faction | Has an advantage against |
|---|---|
| Wings of Dawn | Blood Rose |
| Blood Rose | Guard of Order |
| Guard of Order | Wings of Dawn |
These advantages help, but they do not decide battles on their own. Development still matters: a weak counter lineup is not automatically better than a well-upgraded squad.
For a new account, Wings of Dawn is a sensible investment target. Blood Rose heroes arrive earlier, making that faction a frequent choice among beginners. With otherwise similar development, Wings of Dawn benefits from the favorable matchup.
However, an established Blood Rose or Guard of Order roster is usually worth continuing. Rebuilding around weaker Wings of Dawn heroes just to gain a counter can be costly. Concentrate your main combat resources on a single faction rather than repeatedly changing direction.
Full-Faction Squads Versus a 3+2 Split
When five matching heroes make sense
If your strongest roster already belongs to one faction, use it as your baseline. Fielding five heroes from that faction may unlock both formation benefits and talents that demand a complete faction lineup.
Before swapping anyone out, check those requirements. The value of these effects is not always captured by the power total, and they are not exclusive to players who spend money.
When a mixed formation deserves testing
A 3+2 arrangement can be useful when it keeps a seasonal partnership intact or brings in a sufficiently developed hero to compensate for lost faction effects. The numerical split itself does not trigger a seasonal talent.
Relevant seasonal partnerships include:
- Bella + Licia
- Alma + Liliana
- Harleyena + Dodemeki
Inspect the S3 hero's talent and required star level for each partnership. If you are mixing Wings of Dawn with Blood Rose, pay particular attention to Alma + Liliana and Bella + Licia. Their S3 partner's five-star extension matters when your strategy relies on extending a benefit to multiple troop types.
Do not assume an extension is active before you have unlocked it.
Selecting the final slot
Choose your fifth hero by comparing the whole package:
- Current stars and available combat skills
- Equipped gear
- Compatibility with the troops being deployed
- Contribution to seasonal partnerships
- Any faction-dependent talents gained or lost
A matching faction badge alone is not enough reason to bench a stronger, better-developed option.
Read Talent Conditions Before Choosing Heroes
A useful talent only helps if your formation meets its conditions. For every important effect, establish who receives it: the individual hero, a particular troop type, faction members, or every troop type.
Then verify deployment rules separately. A description covering all troops does not necessarily let you leave that hero out of the fighting squad.
Keep these checks distinct:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Required partner | Removing a named hero may disable a seasonal talent |
| Star threshold | An upgrade-dependent effect cannot be counted early |
| Eligible troops | A bonus may not apply to the units you send |
| Deployment condition | Broad troop coverage does not remove lineup requirements |
| Skill purpose | Construction and research utility should not determine combat slots |
Heroes with account-development benefits do not need a battle position merely because their construction or research skills are useful.
Position Heroes by Their Combat Role
Begin with this layout:
- Front row: two defensive heroes
- Rear row: three damage-focused heroes
Treat it as a starting arrangement rather than an unbreakable rule. Adapt the positions to the roles and capabilities of your available roster.
Match Your Troops to Your Formation
Last Z has three troop categories, each associated with a faction.
| Troops | Associated faction | Main strengths | Relevant buff heroes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assaulters | Blood Rose | Heavy damage and pressure at the front | Selena, Yu Chan, Licia |
| Shooters | Wings of Dawn | Ranged damage from safer rear positions | Queenie, Liliana, Alma; check Shooter-specific buffs |
| Riders | Guard of Order | Movement and flanking potential | Amber, Dodemeki, Sakura; check Rider-specific buffs |
Prioritize one troop category that fits your faction:
- Blood Rose: put Assaulter training and technology first.
- Wings of Dawn: emphasize Shooter training and technology.
- Guard of Order: prioritize Rider training and technology.
Faction alignment is a useful starting point, but skill text takes precedence. Confirm the named troop category, the effect available at the hero's current stars, and any deployment condition. Send units that benefit from the talents your squad actually enables.
Adjust Your Lineup for Each Mode
| Mode | Formation approach | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| PvP / SVS | Use your upgraded faction roster or a mixed squad validated through testing | Examine enemy troops, counter relationships, and enabled talents |
| Canyon Clash | Choose a developed squad appropriate for the opposition | Avoid accidentally disabling a partnership while making substitutions |
| Zombie Siege | Prioritize your strongest damage dealers | Faction counter advantages do not apply in PvE |
| Furylord | Follow the faction assigned for the day | Adjust to the daily rotation |
PvP rewards attention to matchups, but a counter advantage should not outweigh every other consideration. For Zombie Siege, damage output is the priority instead.
Test Changes Without Misleading Results
A higher power figure is not sufficient evidence that a formation is better. Use battle outcomes alongside the displayed rating, and keep the comparison controlled.
Follow this process:
- Assemble a baseline from upgraded combat heroes and compatible troops.
- Record which seasonal talents and full-faction conditions are satisfied.
- Review each hero's role and battlefield position.
- Where practical, make only one substitution per test.
- Test in the mode you actually want to improve.
- Hold troop tier, equipment, and temporary buffs steady between comparisons.
This makes it easier to identify whether a new hero genuinely improves the squad or merely changes its power display.
Formation Mistakes to Avoid
- Breaking a partnership unknowingly: check the talent you would lose before removing either hero.
- Expecting a counter to guarantee victory: faction advantage is only part of the matchup.
- Forcing a 3+2 arrangement: an underdeveloped substitute can cost more than the split provides.
- Counting ineligible troop bonuses: verify that your deployed units receive the effect.
- Assuming five-star coverage too early: only include extensions already unlocked.
- Comparing inconsistent tests: different gear, buffs, or troop tiers can obscure the lineup's real performance.
Quick Tips
- Build around upgraded combat heroes before chasing a formation pattern.
- Consider Wings of Dawn for a fresh account, but do not abandon a strong existing faction just for its counter advantage.
- Compare five matching heroes with a 3+2 alternative by checking enabled talents and battle results.
- Preserve seasonal partners whenever your strategy depends on their effects.
- Start with two defenders forward and three damage dealers behind them.
- Focus training and research on the troop category your formation supports.
- Favor damage in Zombie Siege and follow Furylord's daily faction rotation.
- Keep testing conditions consistent before committing resources to a lineup change.
