MapleStory Classic Avoidability Guide

Updated October 21, 2026

Avoidability, shown as AVOID, determines whether an incoming monster physical attack misses your character in MapleStory Classic World. A successful dodge prevents all damage from that attack, but AVOID offers no protection against monster magic.

What Raises Avoidability?

AVOID is calculated from your attributes, equipment, and applicable skill bonuses rather than allocated directly.

ContributorEffect on AVOID
LUKMain attribute contribution
DEXSmaller attribute contribution
EquipmentAdds avoidance through item bonuses
SkillsAbilities including Nimble Body and Focus can increase avoidance

The precise conversion rates from LUK and DEX into AVOID remain unconfirmed for Classic World. You can rely on LUK being the stronger contributor, but exact gains per attribute point are not yet documented.

Accuracy and avoidability represent opposite sides of an attack check: accuracy helps the attacker connect, while avoidability helps the defender escape the hit.

How Physical Dodging Works

A monster’s accuracy is compared with your AVOID, with a level advantage improving your chances. Under the current model, only levels you have above the monster contribute to that advantage.

The calculation uses:

  • monACC: monster accuracy
  • AVOID: your avoidability
  • L: your positive level advantage
  • A: the monster’s adjusted accuracy
L = max(0, characterLevel - monsterLevel)
A = monACC × 100 / ((L + 51) × 5)
f = 0.3 / (1 + exp((A - AVOID) / 12))
roll = uniform random number in [0.95 - f, 1.05 + f]

Here, exp denotes the natural exponential function. The model compares roll × A against your AVOID; a result below your AVOID produces a dodge.

What the Level Difference Means

MatchupModel behavior
You are higher levelA larger advantage lowers adjusted monster accuracy
Both levels matchL = 0, so there is no level-based dodge benefit
The monster is higher levelL stays at 0; this term adds no further disadvantage

More AVOID generally means more misses from physical attackers, but nearly guaranteed evasion requires it to substantially exceed the monster’s adjusted accuracy.

Important: This dodge calculation remains a provisional model. It mirrors an experimentally verified accuracy calculation, but its incoming-attack results have not been independently validated using a known AVOID value.

Damage After a Physical Hit Connects

If you fail to dodge, physical defense (WDEF) reduces the damage. Unlike the dodge model, this damage calculation has been validated through gameplay testing.

With monATK representing monster attack:

Reduction = floor(min(WDEF × monsterLevel / 70, WDEF / 5))
Taken = max(1, floor(monATK × dmgRoll) - Reduction)

dmgRoll ranges from 1.0 to 1.5.

The monster’s level determines which defense limit applies:

Monster levelDefense behavior
Below 14The WDEF × monsterLevel / 70 branch limits mitigation
14 or higherMitigation uses floor(WDEF / 5)

Against monsters at level 14+, each additional 5 WDEF removes 1 damage from a landed physical hit, subject to the minimum damage floor. A hit that connects always inflicts at least 1 damage.

That gives the two defensive stats distinct jobs: AVOID prevents some hits entirely; WDEF softens those that connect.

Why Magic Ignores AVOID

Monster magic bypasses the avoidance check, much as Magician spells do not miss their targets. Raising AVOID therefore does not make those attacks miss.

Magic defense (MDEF) handles mitigation for magical damage instead. The WDEF calculation above applies to physical damage, not magic.

How Certain Are These Mechanics?

The available findings reflect pre-launch verification.

Treat precise dodge predictions as estimates that may change with further testing, rather than guaranteed percentages.

Quick Tips

  • Prioritize LUK over DEX when comparing their contribution to AVOID.
  • Check equipment and skills such as Nimble Body and Focus for avoidance bonuses.
  • Outleveling a monster improves dodging under the current model.
  • Keep WDEF relevant: avoidance does not eliminate every physical hit.
  • Against magic, look to MDEF, not AVOID.
  • Avoid planning around exact dodge percentages until incoming-hit testing confirms the model.
