MapleStory Classic Bowman guide
Updated October 21, 2026
Bowman is an approachable first-character choice in MapleStory Classic World, with DEX-driven attacks and no starting funds required. This guide covers your early leveling decisions, useful equipment drops, and the permanent weapon specialization you choose at level 30.
Plan Your Stats and Supplies
DEX is your main stat, but weapon requirements make STR important too. Putting everything into DEX can leave you unable to equip an upgrade.
| Weapon | Required level | DEX requirement | STR requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryden | 30 | 65 | 30 |
| Heckler | 40 | 85 | 30 |
Plan around the weapon you intend to equip rather than assuming its level requirement is the only restriction.
Ammunition is part of every supply run. Bows consume arrows, while crossbows use bolts. Check the correct ammunition alongside your potions before leaving town; plenty of HP and MP will not help if you run out of shots.
The available information was verified before launch. Treat the skill paths below as confirmed unlock relationships, not a tested optimal point allocation.
Levels 1–10: Prepare on Maple Island
Your character begins as a Beginner on Maple Island. Fight the island’s monsters until level 10, checking your drops for equipment worth taking to Victoria Island.
One early find is the Green Avelin Skirt, a level 10 Bowman item dropped by Shroom. Keep it if it suits your character rather than selling it with ordinary loot.
Once you reach level 10:
- Travel by boat to Victoria Island.
- Head to Henesys, in the island’s southern region.
- Speak with Athena Pierce to become a Bowman.
This first advancement does not require a quest.
Understand the First-Job Skill Paths
The first job contains six skills arranged into three separate unlock paths.
| Path | Starting skill | Maximum level | Unlock condition | Follow-up skill | Maximum level |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Attacks | Arrow Blow | 20 | Invest 1 point in Arrow Blow | Double Shot | 20 |
| Critical effects | Critical Shot | 15 | Invest 3 points in Critical Shot | Amazon's Judgement | 15 |
| Utility | The Eye of Amazon | 15 | Invest 3 points in The Eye of Amazon | Focus | 20 |
Attacks
Arrow Blow uses MP for a powerful single shot. Its first point opens Double Shot, which launches two arrows and can strike as many as two enemies.
Critical Effects
Critical Shot improves both Critical Rate and Critical Damage. After investing three points, you can learn Amazon's Judgement, allowing critical hits to slow their targets.
Utility
The Eye of Amazon increases your reach with either weapon type. Three points unlock Focus, a temporary buff to Accuracy and Avoidability.
There is no established, tested leveling order for these skills yet. Use the prerequisites to plan your choices without treating an unverified sequence as mandatory.
Equipment to Watch For
Keep promising bows and crossbows before level 30: your permanent specialization comes with the second advancement. For an unfunded character, useful monster drops can reduce the need to buy replacements.
| Equipment level | Item | Monster |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | Green Avelin Skirt | Shroom |
| 10 | Green Winter Hat; Brown Hard Leather Boots | Orange Mushroom |
| 15 | Grey Able Armor | Bubbling |
| 15 | Green Feather Hat; Green Woodsman Boots | Green Mushroom |
| 25 | Green Bennis Chainmail (Male) | Green Mushroom |
| 25 | Red Jack Boots | Jr. Wraith |
| 30 | Ryden — bow; Eagle Crow — crossbow | Wild Boar |
| 35 | Red Viper — bow | Fire Boar |
| 35 | Red Silky Boots | Lorang |
| 40 | Heckler — crossbow | Stirge |
Land of Wild Boar is especially useful near your second advancement. Located two maps away from Perion, it offers appropriately leveled enemies with drops for both level 30 weapon choices.
Other destinations worth remembering are the subway for Jr. Wraith and Florina Beach for Lorang. The level 40 Vaulter 2000 bow has no known acquisition source in the launch information.
Choose Training Spots Around Restocking
A good Bowman training location should offer more than suitable enemies. Short trips back to town make ammunition shortages less disruptive.
- Maple Island: Handle your Beginner leveling here through level 10.
- The Swamp of Despair I: A nearby-town option that keeps supply trips manageable.
- Kerning City subway: Convenient for restocking, with Jr. Wraith also offering level 25 boots.
- Land of Wild Boar: Combine leveling with attempts to obtain your level 30 weapon.
- Ant Tunnel For Bowman: A class-specific area containing level 30 variants of Evil Eyes and Zombie Mushrooms.
Locations only one or two maps away from town are particularly practical when your supplies and money are limited.
Level 30: Pick Your Second Job
Return to Henesys upon reaching level 30 to specialize.
| Second job | Weapon focus |
|---|---|
| Hunter | Bows |
| Crossbowman | Crossbows |
This decision is permanent. Choose the weapon type you want to continue using rather than committing solely because one upgrade happened to drop first.
DEX remains the main stat for either branch, so your early DEX investment supports both options.
Quick Tips
- Build primarily around DEX, but reserve enough STR for planned weapons.
- Carry arrows for bows or bolts for crossbows, and check supplies before every trip.
- Save useful drops for both weapon types until you settle on a specialization.
- Use skill prerequisites to plan unlocks; no tested optimal point order is established.
- Consider Wild Boar when hunting either level 30 weapon.
- Favor nearby-town training spots when frequent restocking would otherwise interrupt leveling.
