MapleStory Classic Magician guide
Updated October 21, 2026
Magicians in MapleStory Classic World rely on INT-powered spells and careful MP management to level on a fresh account. This guide covers your Beginner start, the level 10 advancement, first-job skill unlocks, useful equipment drops, and your permanent specialization at level 30.
Getting Started: Stats and Early Levels
Magician is an easy class to start without funding or special prerequisites. The details here reflect pre-launch information, so treat the skill discussion as an explanation of your options rather than a tested leveling build.
INT is your main stat, but equipment can also require LUK. For example, the level 15 Emerald Staff requires 30 INT and 10 LUK. Check the requirements of your next weapon before assigning points; focusing on INT does not mean ignoring LUK entirely.
From levels 1–10, you begin as a Beginner on Maple Island. Fight local monsters to gain levels; there are no Magician-specific tasks to complete during this stretch.
Your first weapon need not cost anything: Stump on Victoria Island can drop a Wooden Staff, usable by Magicians at level 10.
Advancing to Magician at Level 10
Once you reach level 10:
- Take the boat to Victoria Island.
- Travel to Ellinia.
- Speak with Grendel the Really Old to become a Magician.
There is no advancement quest to complete for this first job change.
First-Job Skills and Unlocks
Your initial toolkit contains six skills, arranged into three separate progression paths. Knowing the prerequisites helps you plan, but there is no established, tested point-by-point build in the pre-launch information.
| Skill path | Starting skill | Unlock requirement | Follow-up skill |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack | Energy Bolt — max 20; uses MP to hit one target | Invest 1 point in Energy Bolt | Magic Claw — max 20; hits the same target twice with each cast |
| MP management | Improved MP Recovery — max 15; improves passive MP regeneration and item-based MP recovery | Invest 3 points in Improved MP Recovery | Max MP Increase — max 15 |
| Protection | Magic Guard — max 15; shifts part of received damage onto MP | Invest 3 points in Magic Guard | Magic Armor — max 20; temporarily raises weapon defense and magic defense |
Why MP Management Matters
MP fuels more than your attacks. With Magic Guard active, it also serves as a defensive resource, helping compensate for the Magician’s exceptionally low HP—the lowest of any class.
Magic Guard does not make damage disappear: it transfers part of the burden to your MP pool. If your MP is empty, incoming damage is applied entirely to HP. Keep enough mana available to cast spells and absorb hits rather than treating your last few MP as spare attack casts.
The recovery path therefore deserves attention alongside offense. Its unlock requirements are confirmed here, but an exact spending order would go beyond the available testing.
Equipment Drops Worth Watching For
Wands and staves are your weapon types. For an unfunded character, useful monster drops can supply upgrades while you earn experience.
| Equipment | Required level | Monster drop | Location detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden Staff | 10 | Stump | Victoria Island |
| Red Apprentice Hat | 10 | Bubbling | Subway beneath Kerning City |
| Blue Basic Boots | 10 | Stirge | Farther into that subway |
| Emerald Staff | 15 | Green Mushroom | Requires 30 INT, 10 LUK |
| Lemona gloves | 15 | Slime | — |
| White Doros Robe | 25 | Jr. Wraith | — |
| Jester hats | 30 | Zombie Mushroom, Wild Boar | — |
| Chaos Robes | 35 | Zombie Mushroom | Ant Tunnel |
| Starlight overalls | 40 | Cold Eye | — |
| Red Guiltian | 40 | Fire Boar | — |
Treat these as upgrade opportunities, not a mandatory shopping list. The level 35 and 40 pieces are later targets to remember after choosing your second job.
Choosing Training Areas
Early on, use Maple Island monsters to reach the first advancement. Afterward, equipment-dropping enemies can give your hunts an additional purpose, provided you can defeat them efficiently and safely.
A few destinations deserve particular attention:
| Area | What to know |
|---|---|
| Kerning City subway | Bubbling and Stirge offer chances at level 10 headwear and boots. |
| Ant Tunnel | Zombie Mushroom can provide Jester hats and, later, Chaos Robes. |
| Magician's Tree Dungeon | Contains level 30 variants of Horny Mushrooms and Curse Eyes. |
| Deeper Sleepywood areas | Long supply runs make potion planning especially important. |
Distance from town matters for a Magician. Attacking consumes MP, and Magic Guard drains the same resource when you take damage. That combination can exhaust your supplies quickly, making deep hunting areas risky if you arrive poorly stocked.
Before committing to a distant map, consider how long your potions will last and how easily you can leave to replenish them. A convenient hunting spot may be more practical than one that repeatedly forces lengthy restocking trips.
Choosing Your Second Job at Level 30
Return to Ellinia at level 30 to select your specialization.
| Second job | Main direction |
|---|---|
| Cleric | Support-oriented progression |
| Wizard (Fire/Poison) | Offensive magic built around fire and poison |
| Wizard (Ice/Lightning) | Offensive magic built around ice and lightning |
This decision is permanent. Choose based on the role and elements you want to use, rather than worrying that your early INT investment locks you into a particular branch: INT remains the primary stat for all three.
Quick Tips
- Reach level 10, then visit Grendel the Really Old in Ellinia for your first advancement.
- Prioritize INT, while checking future equipment for LUK requirements.
- 1 Energy Bolt point opens Magic Claw; 3 Improved MP Recovery points open Max MP Increase.
- 3 Magic Guard points unlock Magic Armor.
- Watch your MP during combat—an empty pool leaves Magic Guard unable to divert damage.
- Look for useful drops while leveling instead of assuming every upgrade must be purchased.
- Carry extra supplies before traveling deep into Sleepywood.
- Review all three branches before making your permanent level 30 choice.
