MapleStory Classic Physical Defense Guide

Updated October 21, 2026

Physical Defense in MapleStory Classic World lowers the damage you suffer from physical attacks that connect. Often labeled WDEF or Weapon Def., it helps soften hits rather than make them miss.

How Player Physical Defense Works

Avoidability determines whether an attack connects before defense enters the calculation. If the attack lands, WDEF subtracts a fixed amount from its damage, with a minimum result of 1 damage.

The incoming calculation is:

Reduction = floor(min(WDEF x monsterLevel / 70, WDEF / 5))
Taken = max(1, floor(monATK x dmgRoll) - Reduction)

Here, monATK represents the attacking monster’s attack value, while dmgRoll ranges from 1.0 to 1.5. The floor operation rounds down.

The monster’s level determines which part of the reduction formula applies:

Attacker’s levelReduction before rounding down
Below 14WDEF × monsterLevel / 70
14 or higherWDEF / 5

Against enemies at level 14 and above, each additional 5 WDEF removes roughly 1 damage per connected attack. For example, 100 WDEF provides a reduction of 20 damage against those enemies.

Because this is a flat deduction rather than percentage mitigation, WDEF has its greatest relative impact against frequent, low-damage attacks. It makes a much smaller difference against powerful boss blows, and stacking it cannot reduce a connected attack to zero.

Ways to Increase WDEF

Your main options are:

  • Armor and shields
  • Defense bonuses added through scrolling
  • Buff skills, including Iron Body

How Enemy Defense Affects Your Attacks

Enemy Physical Defense uses a different calculation from player WDEF. Instead of deducting a fixed amount, it applies a division-based reduction to your rolled physical damage.

Its general behavior favors larger hits: smaller attacks lose a greater share of their damage, making a weapon with higher Weapon Attack better suited to overcoming defense than accumulating minor stat increases.

Several effects interact with enemy defense:

EffectInteraction
ThreatenDirectly reduces the target’s defense
Certain scroll bonusesProvide defense ignore
Crossbow procCan ignore defense

The precise outgoing coefficients remain unverified. Treat damage estimates that exclude enemy defense as pre-mitigation figures, not guaranteed numbers against defended targets.

Typical Monster Defense Values

Across the 107 released monsters in the pre-launch data, median Physical Defense stays surprisingly low throughout the level range.

Monster level rangeMedian WDEF
1–90
10–1910
20–2910
30–3910
40–4915
50–5910
60–6920
70–7915
80–8915
90–9915

From the teens through the nineties, those medians remain between 10 and 20, even as Weapon ATK rises from 54 to 441 across that span.

Additionally, 30 of the 107 monsters have 0 Physical Defense. Most appear on Maple Island or in the early fields of Victoria Island.

For ordinary enemies, defense is therefore rarely the main obstacle. Their HP, your accuracy, and the level difference usually matter more. Defense ignore also has less general value than it would in a system where monster defense increased sharply with level.

Iron Hog: The Major Outlier

Iron Hog is the standout exception. Despite being only level 28, it has 500 Physical Defense—50 times its level band’s median and 10 times the next-highest monster value.

Iron Hog’s Magic Defense is 100, making magic a considerably more favorable approach. A magician generally has an easier matchup than a similarly leveled warrior.

Verification Status

These details reflect pre-launch verification. In-game testing confirms the incoming physical-damage formula; the outgoing calculation is established as division-based, but its exact coefficients are still unconfirmed.

Quick Tips

  • Against level 14+ enemies, budget roughly 5 WDEF per 1 damage prevented.
  • Use Avoidability to evade attacks; use WDEF to soften connected hits.
  • Expect every successful attack to inflict at least 1 damage.
  • Prioritize accuracy, level suitability, and damage output over defense ignore for most monsters.
  • Treat Iron Hog as an unusual physical-defense matchup, not a typical level-28 enemy.
