MapleStory Classic Thief gear guide

Updated October 21, 2026

Build your Thief’s level 10–40 loadout in MapleStory Classic World around affordable shop weapons, useful monster drops, and a few essential crafted pieces. This route assumes you have completed your first job advancement; the equipment details are pre-launch, so unresolved prices and acquisition methods are flagged below.

Plan Your Purchases Around the Shop Limits

Kerning City’s Self-Defence Item Store handles most early upgrades: visit Don Hwang for armor and Cutthroat Manny for weapons. You do not need to replace every slot whenever another tier becomes available.

Choose the listed dark or black armor variants when prices match. Pieces such as Black Ghetto Beanie, Dark Nightshift, Black Pao, Dark Sneak, Dark Tiberian, Black Steal, and Dark Guise provide LUK that their equally priced alternatives lack.

All prices below are in mesos. A missing price or acquisition method means that detail is not confirmed here—not that the item is free.

Before Level 10: Keep Your Mesos

Avoid buying equipment on Maple Island. Red Snails can already provide Red Cloth Pants, usable at level 10, and Brown Duo gloves, usable at level 15.

Save those drops and your money for Kerning City. A dagger-based starter outfit costs roughly 10,000 mesos; choosing Garnier instead adds 2,000 mesos, with 500 mesos more for Subi Throwing Stars.

Levels 10–15: Buy the Basics

Start with the weapon for your chosen path, then fill inexpensive armor slots. Check requirements before spending: being the right level does not automatically make an item equippable.

Male characters can also look for Black Cloth Vest and Black Cloth Pants as starter clothing, although their prices, requirements, and bonuses are not confirmed here.

Claw users should buy Subi Throwing Stars before heading out. Their W.ATK +15 makes them the basic ammunition option; the full star progression appears later in this guide.

Levels 15–20: Hunt Your Next Dagger

Dagger users can pass over the level 15 Field Dagger and target Triple-Tipped Zamadar at level 17. Bubblings drop it, making Line 1 (Area 1) a useful place to combine experience with equipment hunting; the map holds 64 Bubblings.

The weapon is also sold by Cutthroat Manny, but its pre-launch price is inconsistent: 5,800 and 8,700 mesos are both listed. Confirm the shop price before budgeting for a purchase.

15Brown DuoGlovesW.DEF +8, STR +120 LUKRed Snail drop; Leatherworking 3

The Dark Nightshift pieces are straightforward armor purchases. Brown Duo is worth keeping if you found it earlier, since gloves cannot be bought from equipment NPCs.

Levels 20–25: Spend on Meaningful Upgrades

The level 20 Coconut Knife offers too little improvement over Triple-Tipped Zamadar to justify prioritizing it. Save for Stinger at level 22 instead, provided you meet its 17 STR requirement.

At level 25, Iron Dagger is another hunting option. Horny Mushrooms in Ant Tunnel III can drop both that weapon and Black Sneak Pants, giving the map two useful equipment targets.

25MebaClawW.ATK +2925 DEX, 55 LUKCutthroat Manny: 16,500; Weaponcrafting 5

Iron Dagger does not increase attack over Stinger: both have W.ATK +40. Treat it as an alternative with different requirements, rather than a mandatory purchase after Stinger.

Armor choices

Every level 20 piece below requires 10 DEX and 30 LUK. Every level 25 piece requires 15 DEX and 40 LUK.

Once you reach the level 25 shoe tier, plan on crafting or buying from another player instead of relying on NPC stock.

Levels 25–30: Finish the Shop Progression

Forked Dagger provides the next clear dagger attack increase at level 27. At level 30, Reef Claw is the following dagger option—its name does not make it a claw weapon.

For claw users, Meba is the final NPC purchase. Prepare for Weaponcrafting before replacing it with Steel Guards.

Lorang also drops pieces from the level 30 Steal set, making Florina Beach worth considering if you want to hunt armor rather than buy it.

Levels 30–40: Move to Drops and Crafting

NPC equipment stock does not extend beyond the level 30 Thief tiers. From here, match your hunting locations to desired drops and arrange crafted weapons, gloves, and shoes.

Korean Fan offers a different requirement profile from Gephart: it needs 70 LUK, with no listed DEX requirement. Gephart has the higher attack value, at 58 versus 55.

The level 40 Shadow set exists in the equipment data, but its acquisition method remains unconfirmed. Do not make it a required part of your progression plan.

Throwing Stars: Upgrade Alongside Your Claw

Your star selection contributes attack as well as your claw. Every set listed below has a level 10 requirement, so acquisition—not a higher level gate—is the main obstacle to these ammunition upgrades.

StarsW.ATKAcquisition
Subi Throwing Stars+15500 mesos from 24 Hr Mobile Store, Arturo, Dr. Faymus, Len the Fairy, Luna, Mina, or Mr. Sweatbottom

Start with Subi rather than delaying your first training trip. Later, Fire Boars and Jr. Wraiths offer opportunities to improve ammunition while also hunting armor.

Crafting Milestones to Prepare For

You can level the professions yourself or purchase finished equipment from other players. The profession ranks below identify when each equipment tier becomes available; material recipes and crafting costs are not specified here.

The Guards, Guardian, and Avarice families also include stat variants made from their base claws. Check the finished version’s bonuses before commissioning one.

Quick Tips

  • Save on Maple Island: keep useful Red Snail drops and postpone shopping until Kerning City.
  • Prefer bonus-bearing colors: the recommended dark and black armor often adds LUK without a higher shop price.
  • Skip weak dagger purchases: bypass Field Dagger and Coconut Knife when following this route.
  • Hunt before buying: Bubblings can supply Triple-Tipped Zamadar; Horny Mushrooms can supply Iron Dagger and Black Sneak Pants.
  • Check STR requirements: Stinger needs 17 STR, while Iron Dagger needs 20 STR.
  • Prepare for crafting early: shoes change over at level 25, and claws at level 30.
  • Verify uncertain details: especially Triple-Tipped Zamadar’s price and any item with an unconfirmed acquisition method.
