MapleStory Classic Thief guide
Updated October 21, 2026
A Thief in MapleStory Classic World relies on LUK, with a choice between close-range dagger combat and ranged claw attacks. This beginner-friendly guide covers your first levels, skill prerequisites, useful equipment drops, and the permanent specialization you choose at level 30.
Build Overview and Stats
| Category | Details |
|---|---|
| Class | Thief |
| Difficulty | Easy |
| Starting resources | No funding required |
| Main stat | LUK |
| Equipment stat | DEX, according to item requirements |
| Information status | Pre-launch; skill allocation orders remain untested |
LUK is your main investment, but you cannot ignore DEX when planning equipment upgrades. Later daggers and claws require it, so check your next weapon before distributing your stats.
These two daggers illustrate how requirements increase:
| Weapon | Required level | LUK requirement | DEX requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Triple-Tipped Zamadar | 17 | 31 | 11 |
| Halfmoon Zamadar | 35 | 70 | 30 |
There is no established, tested stat or skill allocation sequence here. Use equipment requirements and skill prerequisites to plan rather than treating an exact point-by-point build as proven.
Starting Out and Becoming a Thief
Begin as a Beginner on Maple Island and fight local monsters until level 10. Red Snail is worth keeping an eye on because it can drop two early Thief items:
- Red Cloth Pants (Male): usable at level 10.
- Brown Duo: gloves usable at level 15.
Once you reach level 10, travel by ship to Victoria Island. Head northwest to Kerning City and speak with Dark Lord to become a Thief; this advancement does not require a quest.
Pick Your Weapon Direction
Your first job offers an attack skill for each weapon type. Between levels 10 and 30, you can explore both styles before committing to a second job.
| Direction | Weapon | First-job attack | Level 30 specialization |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close-range fighting | Dagger | Double Stab | Bandit |
| Ranged fighting | Claw and throwing stars | Lucky Seven | Assassin |
Daggers suit players who want to fight up close. Claws provide a ranged option, but throwing stars add an ongoing supply expense: you must buy and replenish them.
For an unfunded character, that ammunition cost matters when planning hunting trips. Experimenting can help you choose a style, but avoid spending heavily on both weapon paths before deciding which one you intend to keep.
First-Job Skills and Prerequisites
Thieves have six first-job skills. Two provide attacks, while the others offer passive bonuses, range, enemy disruption, or concealment.
| Skill | Maximum level | Effect | Prerequisite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double Stab | 20 | Uses MP for a two-hit dagger attack | None listed |
| Lucky Seven | 20 | Launches two throwing stars, with damage determined by LUK | None listed |
| Nimble Body | 15 | Passively increases Accuracy and Avoidability | None listed |
| Keen Eyes | 15 | Increases throwing distance | Nimble Body: 3 points |
| Disorder | 20 | Reduces a target’s attack and defense and makes it stop targeting you | None listed |
| Dark Sight | 20 | Conceals you from attacks, but prevents you from attacking while concealed | Disorder: 3 points |
The important unlocks are straightforward:
- Invest 3 points in Nimble Body to access Keen Eyes.
- Invest 3 points in Disorder to access Dark Sight.
Keen Eyes supports the claw route by extending your reach. Dark Sight serves a different purpose: it lets you avoid attacks, not deal damage while hidden.
Because a tested allocation order has not been established, treat these prerequisites as planning information rather than a prescribed leveling sequence.
Equipment Drops to Target
Several useful upgrades come from monsters around Kerning City, making it possible to combine leveling with equipment hunting.
| Item | Item level | Monster |
|---|---|---|
| Red Ninja Sandals | 15 | Orange Mushroom |
| Triple-Tipped Zamadar | 17 | Bubbling |
| Green Loosecap | 20 | Blue Mushroom |
| Red Tiberian | 25 | Octopus |
| Sneak Pants | 25 | Horny Mushroom |
| Bronze Wolfskin | 25 | Jr. Wraith |
| Red Guise | 30 | Fire Boar |
| Dark Guise | 30 | Jr. Wraith |
| Bronze Chain Boots | 30 | Lupin |
| Steal tops and bottoms | 30 | Lorang |
| Knucklevest pieces | 35 | Fire Boar and Curse Eye |
Bubbling is especially convenient for dagger users: it drops the level 17 Triple-Tipped Zamadar and is found two maps away from Kerning City.
Lorang on Florina Beach has several potentially useful drops. Alongside level 30 Steal clothing, it can drop the level 35 Cat's Eye earring and the level 40 Korean Fan.
The Halfmoon Zamadar is a level 35 dagger, but its acquisition method is unknown in the launch information. Do not make your upgrade plan depend on obtaining one.
Training Areas to Consider
The early route starts on Maple Island, then shifts toward Kerning City after advancement. Its subway offers nearby hunting options extending into the mid-thirties.
| Character level or milestone | Area or target | Why consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 1–10 | Maple Island | Reach your first advancement and look for early Red Snail drops |
| 10 | Kerning City | Speak with Dark Lord to advance |
| Around 13 | Bubbling in the Kerning City subway | Nearby training with a chance at Triple-Tipped Zamadar |
| Mid-thirties | Jr. Wraith in the subway | Training target that also drops Bronze Wolfskin and Dark Guise |
These are useful landmarks rather than a complete map-by-map leveling schedule.
Another area to investigate is Thief's Construction Site, which contains level 30 variants of Blue Mushroom and Cold Eye. Those levels describe the monsters there, not a confirmed recommendation for when every Thief should train on them.
If you use a claw, include star replenishment in your travel plans. Running out of ammunition can cut an otherwise productive session short.
Choosing Your Second Job at Level 30
Return to Kerning City at level 30 to specialize.
| Second job | Weapon focus | Combat direction |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin | Claws and throwing stars | Ranged attacks |
| Bandit | Daggers | Close-range attacks |
This choice is permanent. Use your first-job experience to decide which fighting style you enjoy before committing.
Both branches continue to prioritize LUK, so trying the two weapon styles does not mean abandoning your main stat investment. The more significant difference is the equipment and mesos you have committed to a particular weapon path.
Quick Tips
- Reach level 10, then visit Dark Lord in Kerning City for your first advancement.
- Prioritize LUK while keeping enough DEX for your planned equipment.
- Remember the two unlock thresholds: Nimble Body 3 and Disorder 3.
- Hunt Bubbling if you want a chance at the level 17 Triple-Tipped Zamadar.
- Carry sufficient throwing stars before heading out with a claw.
- Avoid relying on Halfmoon Zamadar while its acquisition method remains unknown.
- Choose carefully at level 30: Assassin uses claws, while Bandit uses daggers.
