MapleStory Classic Wizard (Ice/Lightning) Guide
Updated October 21, 2026
Ice/Lightning Wizard gives Magicians in MapleStory Classic World a mix of enemy control and lightning damage against nearby groups. Commonly shortened to I/L, this INT-based class uses Cold Beam and Thunder Bolt as its signature attacks.
Class Overview
| Detail | Ice/Lightning Wizard |
|---|---|
| Class branch | Magician |
| Advancement tier | 2nd job |
| Previous class | Magician |
| Minimum advancement level | 30 |
| Main attribute | INT |
| Casting weapons | Wands and staves |
| Home town | Ellinia |
| Information status | Pre-launch |
I/L suits players who want to hinder enemies while dealing elemental damage. Cold Beam focuses on one target, while Thunder Bolt attacks monsters around the caster.
The pre-launch version does not yet include a 3rd-job advancement, so plan your progression around the available Magician and Wizard skills.
How to Become an Ice/Lightning Wizard
Your character must be a Magician at level 30 or above. Visit the library belonging to Grendel the Really Old in Ellinia to begin the Magician advancement quest.
Complete that quest and select the Ice/Lightning Wizard route. The other choices at this stage are Fire/Poison Wizard and Cleric, so check your selection before committing.
Advancing does not remove your existing toolkit: your first-job Magician abilities remain usable.
Skills and Their Uses
The MP figures below show the listed progression from the initial cost to the final cost.
| Skill | Maximum level | Unlock requirement | MP cost progression | Main function |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cold Beam | 30 | None listed | 11 → 22 | Ice damage against one enemy, with a brief slowing effect |
| Thunder Bolt | 30 | None listed | 20 → 40 | Lightning damage around you, with a possible stun |
| Meditation | 20 | MP Eater level 3 | 15 → 25 | Temporarily raises nearby party members’ Magic Attack |
| MP Eater | 20 | None listed | Not specified | Recovers MP from enemies through magic attacks |
| Slow | 20 | Teleport level 5 | 15 → 8 | Reduces movement speed for several enemies |
| Teleport | 20 | None listed | 55 → 15 | Directional movement within your current map |
Cold Beam is the single-target option. Its ice damage is stronger against fire-based monsters and weaker against ice-based monsters. Targets without strong ice resistance are briefly slowed when struck.
Thunder Bolt handles surrounding enemies rather than just one target. Monsters that do not resist lightning can also suffer an electrocution stun, but that effect is a chance rather than a guarantee.
Meditation provides a temporary Magic Attack boost to party members nearby. Its prerequisite makes MP Eater level 3 an important planning point if you want access to the buff.
MP Eater absorbs enemy MP when you attack with magic. Absorption can occur only once per 5 seconds, and a monster with 0 MP cannot supply any.
Slow affects up to 4 monsters at a time. You cannot apply it to the same enemies more than twice consecutively, so it is not an unlimited control loop.
Teleport uses your directional input to move a fixed distance without changing maps. Its listed MP cost drops as the skill develops, unlike the increasing costs of the two main attacks.
Planning Your Skill Investment
Rather than following an unsupported point-by-point build, use the known skill functions to decide what your character needs next:
- For individual targets: Cold Beam offers focused damage and a brief movement penalty against suitable enemies.
- For nearby packs: Thunder Bolt gives you a way to damage multiple surrounding monsters.
- For a party damage buff: Reach MP Eater level 3 to unlock Meditation.
- For additional movement control: Reach Teleport level 5 to unlock Slow.
Elemental matchups matter. Cold Beam is a useful choice against fire-based enemies, but its reduced damage against ice-based targets makes those opponents less attractive. Likewise, do not rely on Thunder Bolt’s stun when fighting lightning-resistant monsters.
Weapons: Prioritize Magic Attack
Both wands and staves are valid casting weapons. Magic Attack is the most important equipment contribution to your damage, so compare that value alongside the level and attribute requirements.
These weapon options cover several useful progression points:
| Weapon | Type | Required level | Required attributes | W.Atk | M.Atk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wooden Staff | Staff | 10 | INT 20 | 20 | 24 |
| Sapphire Staff | Staff | 15 | INT 30, LUK 10 | 25 | 31 |
| Emerald Staff | Staff | 15 | INT 30, LUK 10 | 25 | 31 |
| Old Wooden Staff | Staff | 20 | INT 40, LUK 15 | 30 | 38 |
| Wizard Staff | Staff | 25 | INT 50, LUK 20 | 35 | 45 |
| Ice Wand | Wand | 25 | INT 50, LUK 15 | 24 | 48 |
| Mithril Wand | Wand | 30 | INT 60, LUK 20 | 27 | 55 |
| Wizard Wand | Wand | 35 | INT 70, LUK 25 | 43 | 62 |
| Fairy Wand | Wand | 40 | INT 80, LUK 30 | 48 | 69 |
| Arc Staff | Staff | 45 | INT 90, LUK 40 | 55 | 73 |
| Cromi | Wand | 50 | INT 100, LUK 40 | 58 | 83 |
At the advancement threshold, Mithril Wand is a level-appropriate option if you meet its INT 60 and LUK 20 requirements. Later choices include Fairy Wand, Arc Staff, and Cromi; evaluate their Magic Attack rather than choosing solely by weapon category.
Armor and Attribute Requirements
I/L uses Magician clothing, including robes, hats, gloves, and shoes. INT remains your main attribute, but many equipment pieces also have LUK requirements.
The following examples give you a compact set of armor milestones rather than an exhaustive wardrobe.
| Required level | Example overall | Required attributes |
|---|---|---|
| 15 | Blue Plain Robe | INT 20 |
| 25 | White Doros Robe | INT 40, LUK 15 |
| 30 | Blue Wizard Robe | INT 50, LUK 20 |
| 35 | Dark Chaos Robe | INT 60, LUK 25 |
| 40 | Blue Starlight | INT 70, LUK 30 |
| 50 | Dark Calaf | INT 90, LUK 40 |
| 60 | Blue Anakamoon | INT 110, LUK 50 |
| 70 | Dark Requiem | INT 130, LUK 60 |
Shield options include Mystic Shield, requiring level 22, INT 34, and LUK 12, and Esther Shield, requiring level 35, INT 60, and LUK 25.
Check weapons and armor separately before planning attribute allocation. For example, Blue Wizard Robe and Mithril Wand both require level 30 and LUK 20, but the robe needs INT 50 while the wand needs INT 60.
Quick Tips
- Begin the advancement process in Ellinia once your Magician reaches level 30.
- Choose Cold Beam for single targets and Thunder Bolt for surrounding groups.
- Favor fire-based targets when using Cold Beam; ice-based enemies take reduced damage.
- Unlock Meditation through MP Eater level 3 and Slow through Teleport level 5.
- Remember MP Eater’s 5-second absorption limit and its dependence on enemy MP.
- Compare Magic Attack and equipment requirements before replacing a wand or staff.
- Treat these details as pre-launch information; a 3rd-job route is not yet available in that version.
